The Profession in the Field — The Graphic, 26 March 1892
This charming and historically distinctive original wood engraving, drawn by Edward Frederick Brewtnall and published in The Graphic on 26 March 1892, depicts a scene that was unique to the Victorian professional world: the outdoor field examination of candidates for the Surveyors' Institute — the body now known as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) — held in the grounds of Osterley Park, the magnificent 18th-century estate in Middlesex, by gracious invitation of Victor Child Villiers, the 7th Earl of Jersey.
The Surveyors' Institute, founded in 1868 and granted its royal charter in 1881, was at the forefront of the Victorian drive to professionalise the practice of surveying — to transform what had been a trade of variable standards and informal apprenticeship into a learned profession with rigorous examinations, ethical standards, and a recognised body of knowledge. The field examination at Osterley was the practical counterpart to the written papers: candidates were required to demonstrate their skills in measurement, levelling, and assessment in real outdoor conditions, under the eye of examiners and in the company of their peers.
Osterley Park — with its sweeping parkland, ornamental lakes, and Robert Adam interiors — provided a setting of considerable grandeur for what was, in essence, a professional test. Lord Jersey's hospitality in hosting the examinations on his estate for many years was a mark of the social standing that the Surveyors' Institute had achieved by the early 1890s, and of the close relationship between the landed gentry and the professional classes that characterised late Victorian England.
Edward Frederick Brewtnall (1846–1902) was a distinguished English watercolourist and illustrator, elected to the Royal Watercolour Society, whose work for The Graphic combined technical precision with a warm and observant eye for social detail.
