The Kaiser's Army on Skis — The Graphic, 2 April 1892

This fascinating original wood engraving, attributed to the English School (19th century) and published in The Graphic on 2 April 1892, depicts Imperial German military personnel conducting winter manoeuvres on early skis — referred to in the English press of the era as “snow-shoes” — in the Harz Mountains near the historic town of Goslar in northern Germany.

By the early 1890s, the military potential of skiing was beginning to attract serious attention from the armies of Europe. The Scandinavian nations had long used skis for winter warfare and reconnaissance, and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 had demonstrated the strategic importance of winter mobility in European conflict. The Imperial German Army, under the modernising impetus of the Wilhelmine era, was among the first of the great continental powers to experiment systematically with ski troops — and the Harz Mountains, with their reliable winter snowfall and varied terrain, provided an ideal training ground close to the military establishments of northern Germany.

Goslar itself — one of the great medieval towns of the Harz, with its imperial palace and ancient mining heritage — lent the scene a particular historical resonance: soldiers of the newest and most powerful military machine in Europe practising the arts of winter warfare in the shadow of a thousand years of German history.

For British readers, the image carried a frisson of both admiration and unease. The German Army was widely regarded as the finest in the world, and its adoption of ski manoeuvres was a reminder of the relentless military modernisation that was reshaping the balance of power in Europe.
