Four Vignettes from the American West — The Graphic, 28 June 1879

This exceptional full-page original wood engraving, published in The Graphic on 28 June 1879, is the second instalment of the paper's celebrated Sketches in the Territories of the United States series — a landmark of Victorian frontier reportage that brought the drama, danger, and raw vitality of the American West to readers across Britain.

The spread presents four individual woodblock engravings, each capturing a distinct facet of life and adventure in the vast, largely ungoverned territories of the American West. In 1879, these territories — stretching from the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains and beyond — were still in the process of being mapped, settled, and contested. The US Army was engaged in the final campaigns of the Indian Wars; cattle drives were pushing north along the great trails; prospectors were flooding into newly discovered mineral fields; and the railroad was stitching together a continent at extraordinary speed.

The Graphic's artists and correspondents were among the most adventurous of the Victorian illustrated press, and this series reflects their ambition: to document a world in transformation, to show British readers the human scale of the American frontier experience — its hardships, its humour, its violence, and its grandeur.
