Gilded Age Collegiate Rivalry on the Water — Harper's Weekly, 1883
This spirited original wood engraving, published in Harper's Weekly in 1883, captures one of the great spectacles of the Gilded Age sporting calendar: the freshman crew race between Harvard University and Columbia University on the Thames River at New London, Connecticut — a contest that drew enormous crowds and intense national interest to the banks of one of America's most celebrated rowing venues.
By the 1880s, intercollegiate rowing had become the premier spectator sport of the American educated classes. The Thames at New London — a straight, sheltered stretch of tidal river ideally suited to racing — had been the home of the Harvard-Yale regatta since 1878, and the addition of Columbia to the collegiate rowing circuit brought new rivalries and new drama to the water. The freshman race, pitting the next generation of oarsmen against one another, was followed with particular intensity by alumni, students, and the sporting press alike.
Harper's Weekly covered the collegiate regattas with characteristic thoroughness, sending artists to capture the racing shells at full stroke, the crowded spectator steamers, the bunting-draped grandstands, and the jubilant or crestfallen crews at the finish. This print is a vivid record of that world — of youth, competition, and the confident energy of America's great universities in the age of their first flowering.
