Tiffany at the White House — Harper's Weekly, 6 January 1883

This magnificent original wood engraving by Charles Graham, published as a full-page illustration in Harper's Weekly on 6 January 1883, documents one of the most celebrated and short-lived interiors in American history: the lavish Aesthetic Movement redesign of the White House, commissioned by President Chester A. Arthur and executed by the incomparable Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Arthur, a man of refined taste who had refused to move into the White House until it had been thoroughly renovated, engaged Tiffany — then at the height of his early fame as a decorator and glass artist — to transform the state rooms into a showcase of the Aesthetic Movement's most ambitious ideals. The result was extraordinary: silver-panelled walls, richly patterned ceilings, exotic textiles, and the centrepiece of the entire scheme — a monumental opalescent glass screen in the entrance hall, its interlocking geometric patterns of coloured glass filtering the light in a way that astonished all who saw it.

Graham's illustration captures the full splendour of Tiffany's vision across multiple rooms, offering a rare and detailed record of interiors that would survive for less than two decades: in 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt ordered a comprehensive renovation under the architect Charles McKim, and Tiffany's screen — along with much of the Arthur-era decoration — was demolished. What Graham recorded in 1883 is, for many of these spaces, the only detailed visual record that survives.

Charles Graham was one of Harper's Weekly's most accomplished staff illustrators, celebrated for his architectural and interior subjects. This print represents some of his finest work — and one of the most historically significant commissions of his career.
